What is your opinion on this? Why do people ask questions that need to be answered in person by a vet? Why do people ask the question, and put at the end, ';I can't take it to the vet, so don't say that.';
Should people who can't afford vet care be allowed to have dogs?
Opinions please!
LEGIT: What are you getting your dog for Christmas? Why do people ask for advice when it's obvious they need to go to the vet?
It drives me insane too. Its out of shame that they know they messed up. A few people are just trying to get a sense of how serious a situation is and every once in a while es it is something you can handle at home (like removing a whole tick). Most are too cheap and didn't think ahead for a situation like that, and they can't find enough of a spine to call because they are too ashamed to admit that they won't be coming in if that is what they recommend.
Of course they shouldn't have a dog if they can't afford it. I don't expect everyone to pay $50,000 for a surgery but you need to be able to at LEAST afford an initial emergency vet visit.
And another HUGE problem is that some people just aren't rusting their vet because they can't accept that they are human and could possibly make a mistake, so they harm their pet worse by trying to fix it on their own. I can never understand the ';the vet's complicated college speak confuses me so it must not be good'; logic. Urgh.
Good rule of thumb: If you had the same problem, would you go to the doctor? Why do people ask for advice when it's obvious they need to go to the vet?
You sort of answered that yourself. They are looking for a cheap easy fix because many of them can't afford to have a pet. When they take a pet home they are thinking some cheap pet food is all they will need. They don't stop to think the pet will get ill/injured and need a vet. Ironically that cheap pet food is often the problem.
Personally I think/believe that people that can not afford quality food, training and vet care when the pet needs it should not have one. Pets will need vets.
Also many people do not properly train their dog then complain they have a bad behaved dog. Of course they do, they never taught it how to behave. I say properly trained because ';rubbing their nose in it'; or using shock collars is not properly training dogs. Dogs reapond to positive reinforcement.
a better question is should people who can't afford health care be allowed to have children? To me they are the same thing. When you take on a pet, you should be making a commitment. Just like an infant, that pet is dependent on you for food, shelter, and medical care. If you know that you aren't going to be able to take your pet to the vet when they need it, don't get one. That said, it's possible that a person who could afford to take an animal to the vet, finds themselves no longer able to pay for a vet visit at the drop of a hat. Thus they are asking for advice on what else they might do to care for their animal.
Be glad these people are at least TRYING...there are far far too many unloved, uncarde for pets out there whose owners can't be bothered to even do that much. Tying an animal up in your backyard does NOT count as ';having a pet';.
I think most people set out with good intentions when getting a pet. Some of them don't do their research and get poorly bred dogs and end up costing a lot more in the long run.
It drives me nuts when you know something is serious and they get on here and ask questions. If you can't afford proper vet care, don't get a dog, plain and simple.
As for Christmas, I am getting each of my dogs an awesome handmade blanket from www.allraggedout.com
they have different breeds available and can also add your own photos to the blanket also.
it's one thing to get a dog when you can afford vet care, then because of circumstances that change your income and have to struggle to keep your pet and quite another to get a pet without looking into the money it costs to maintain a pet and finding out you can't afford one.
if they have a computer they can pawn for vet money then that's what should be done.
i have 14 dogs. all rescues. all UTD and altered. i budget 100.00 per dog per month. and i have a set up with my vet that i put money on my account every week in case of extreme emergencies.
and if you are a conscientious pet parent and take your pet to the vet when your supposed to, most vets will trust you enough to take post dated checks or payments.
so when someone asks for medical advice and it's obvious they need a vet, they're either too cheap, lazy or stupid and they shouldn't have a goldfish, let alone a dog.
not taking a dog to the vet when needed is NEGLECT bordering on CRUELTY.
A few people seem to be on the fence about whether a minor issue is something serious enough to warrant calling. They don't want to appear silly or overanxious.
Some don't have or don't want to spend the money. Some don't want to pay extra for an after-hours visit or emergency vet. Sometimes they don't want to take the time.
The saddest ones are the kids who want to take their pet to a vet and the parents won't do it.
Some people really don't know when they should take their dog to the vet. At least they are TRYING to get help. Yes, it is usually obvious to those of us who have more experience with dogs. But why waste money for something minor?
I own the dog owners veterinary handbook %26amp; I think it's a great resource for ALL dog owners. It definitely gives you some insite on a lot of canine health issues.
What am I getting my dogs for Christmas? They are each getting a big ol' bone so they leave me alone for a day! LOL
I think people should be able to have a pet if they cant afford the pet bill. a pet is something that can become your bestfriend. most people asks questions because they don't want to hear bad news from the vet because the vet exaggerates. Pet bills can be very expensive.! When my dog died it hurt me so bad.! I felt like i lost a half of me. Sad to say when it's your time to go it's your time. I never thought i would ever be able to say that. So that answers your question. some people need pets to talk to. not just to afford. everyone needs a bestfriend.!! but if you cant afford a pet you shouldve thought about the pet bills before you got it.!
';Allowed'; to have a dog.. I love my animals and do choose to take them to the vet for their care. That being said, I think their are very rare cases where someone should be able to dictate to another about how to care for their animal. You may not think it's right and you may not react the same way if your pet were sick, but you can't force your values on another person.
Law enforcement pertaining to both children and pets should exist only to protect them from a radically irresponsible ';parent'; and if that child/pet were in imminent danger. Outside of that, we should have the freedom to choose the type of preventative and/or emergency care our pets may need.
It certainly isn't a perfect world, and if you look at a question I just posted, you will understand I do wish every animal were cared for the way I care for my own. But... it isn't my place to decide those things for others.
I have a thin Great Dane with a perfect bill of health-he's just a thin guy. Some cops were mad at us for something ridiculous and, scrambling to come up with a way to nail us, threatened to charge us with animal cruelty. I wasn't worried because I knew my dog was fine and his vet would certainly back me up, but it crossed my mind how lucky we were that these people's perceptions weren't law or enforceable.
Just something to think about.
i am an animal lover, i have two dogs, five cats and a parakeet, and in my opinion if you cannot afford vet care, your not a responsible pet owner, its as simple as that.....take something as simple as worms or ear mites, you cannot even get rid of those properly without a vet and prescriptions so, anyone who is getting a pet, make sure you have the means to get it proper vet care.......
I have asked this question once or twice before and there were very mixed views on it...
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;鈥?/a>
I say in that question that pets are a luxary not a neccesity, and i still stand by that. We dont NEED to have and own pets.
But for people who panic, i can see why they want to ask those sort of questions when they really need to pick up the phone instead!
Some of these ';questions'; seem like coming from poverty stricken regions of Africa. Give me a break!!!!!!!!!!
Most of this crap is typed on laptops with high speed connection while playing $499 XBox.
Pathetic!!!
';can't afford'; or ';no $$$$ for the vet'; will never cut it!!!!!
I totally agree with your consternation and frustration.
After seeing so many of these questions with the same stupid excuses, I snapped one day and answered ';then I guess you let it die';
I think a huge portion of the public should not have dogs. Nor children
For situations where it's patently obvious that urgent veterinary attention is required, a person of average intelligence would grab the car keys, dog %26amp; rush straight to the vet.
As a rule of thumb that leaves a) people who are unwilling to pay for out of hours/emergency veterinary treatment %26amp; either hope YA will provide a quick fix or validate their decision not to do anything b)immature trolls with nothing better to do than create fictitious scenarios.
I have canine insurance for both my Dobes. They receive the veterinary they need, the moment they need it. If you cannot afford to pay for veterinay treatment, then no, you should not have a dog.
Legit: Two pre packed Christmas stocking, two plush toys and two extra large rawhide bones.
Most of the time it is is because they claim poverty - they have no money, no car, etc. and can't get the dog to a vet.
Yet somehow they have a computer and online service - not exactly free, or even cheap, so how much credence can you give to their indigent pleas?
People like that are just incredibly selfish, they don't want to spend money on a flea ridden or sick dog, so they ask for ';natural'; preventatives for fleas and ticks and ';home remedies'; for everything from wounds to cancer in dogs - it is indeed downright criminal as you point out. Most of it is in the class of animal neglect, if not downright abuse (my boyfriend/husband kicked our dog, the dog can't walk, but husband/boyfriend didn't mean to kick him so hard, etc.).
Idiots like this need to get a conscience before they get a dog - but it's a free country and the laws on dog ownership are absurd, but laws there are and you cannot let a dog suffer and die knowingly, it IS ANIMAL NEGLECT at best, abuse in many cases.
If you can afford your computer, online service, = usually cigarettes, beer, and lottery tickets, and all the other garbage people buy - you can somehow find the money, or borrow it, to get your dog to a vet if he's sick or injured.
Do NOT get a dog until you are financially capable of caring for one - and willing to put your ';wants'; aside when the dog needs vetting.
End sermon, but you are right, it is the number one source of irresponsible questions on here --- this is not a vet's office, we can't see your dogs, and you have no business asking about major health issues - you need to get your dog to the vet to be looked at and treated.
