**EXPERIENCED HORSE PEOPLE** i need advice**?

Hey yall i have a 5 y.o Quarter Horse/Mustang Barrel Horse that i have trained and i really dont want to give up on her quiet yet but im getting pretty impatient with her.

so we do fine at Saddle Club, open shows, and small shows. But i took her to a rodeo a few weekends ago and she went out in the arena and reared straight up. im sorta thinkin my own nervousnes could have had something to do with it, and im kinda thinkin that her being in heat very well could have had something to do with it too. so let me know how i can fix her. thanks yall

Cowgirl Up..

Additional Details

this rearing sh** only started about a month and a half ago it seems like she only does it at home when she is in heat. i cant like work around her schedule ya know what if i got finals and whop there she goes in heat i can keep doin this. this is a new issue that has started, not only to say at that rodeo that was EMBARRASSING!!. but i thought maybe it was the tie down so i took that off that hardley helped any just makes it now to where its hard to stop her. now she has nothing to balance off of. i thought she was doing quiet well with the tie down when she didnt rear and its only around to the first barrel she runs the second and third amazing its just that damn first one. i even backed up and walked and trotted her around em. it worked he didnt rear at all its just when i lope or run her. ADVICE??**EXPERIENCED HORSE PEOPLE** i need advice**?
If she's only doing it when she's in heat, you could put her on Mare Magic or something like that.**EXPERIENCED HORSE PEOPLE** i need advice**?
When she leans in to turn that first barrel when you are loping/running her it might put pressure on that shoulder more than it does when she is trotting/walking. Which is causing it to either pinch that muscle.

Another thing is back problems some horses get it when they are young rather than old. I would go to your vet and ask him/her about acupuncture but if that is what she needs then you have to keep it up monthly.

Maybe the signs scared her i have heard of horses like that.

Hope She gets better!
This is just a theory but if it is just the first barrel that she is bad at and then she is good for the second and third barrel, she might just be a horse that needs to be a little warmed up before she can perform. There is a book called The Ultimate Horse Training and Behavior Book by Linda-Tellington Jones that gives you a lot of good stretch and massage techniques that can help with certain issues and overall just make your horse more supple. This really helped my sisters horse who used to refuse to canter in the arena. Is there a practice area that you could use before you go in to do your round that has barrels set up? If not just bring a barrel with you in your trailer and haver her go around it a few times like you would if you were actually going to run a pattern. Like other people have said, there are certain things that you can get the vet to give your mare that can keep her from going into heat, which would help you determine whether it is what is causing your problems. It really could have been your nervousness. I used to be anxious and nervous and pretty much expecting the worst to happen and my horse was rearing, bucking, lunging, and leaping like a crazy fool. Once I got my emotions together and developed a firm and in command attitude he settled right down and did whatever I wanted him to without a fight. It really takes a lot of patience and concentration to become absolutely devoid of any negative emotion, but it is possible. You need to find something that works for you to keep you calm. for me it was listening to my ipod or the radio while I rode, and now I don't need those things to stay focused and calm-assertive. It might also help to bring your horse with you to shows even if you aren't showing so that you could possibly rider her in as many arenas as you can and desensitize her to new places. Some shows will let you and others won't so I would call ahead and ask. You could also try cantering up to the first barrel, slowing down to a trot to go around it and then resume the canter as you go for the second barrel and then just keep cantering. Then after awhile you can try cantering the whole time, because after awhile her behavior of rearing at the first barrel will become extinct and she will no longer react that way.
Has the rearing only occurred at the rodeo arena? If so, I would suspect that something there is scaring her. Can you go to the rodeo arena while there is no rodeo and just practice there?

If you are seeing the behavior just about any time that she is in heat, you might want talk to your vet about putting her on Regumate or a similar product to regulate her cycles.

I am still a bit concerned that soreness may be an issue since you say she runs the first barrel badly, but the second and third fine. I am assuming that you always run the first barrel to the same direction and the second and third in the opposite direction. It could be that making that tight a turn in the first direction is hurting her in some way.
If she's only rearing at the first barrel she may be sore. I'm not sure if it would be in her leg/shoulder or it could even be in he mouth. If she has started running threw her bit a little more, try changing bits. Also, have you had her teeth checked? The hooks on her teeth may very well be hurting her face when you turn in the direction of the first barrel. If she isn't that sore, she may only react to the pain when she's going faster than a walk or trot. I would check her mouth/teeth and try changing bits. Also, I would examine/rub down her front end from shoulders to feet and see if she is sore anywhere or has a hidden injury. If you're running her quite often, give her a week or so off.
if youre nervous and scared she can feel it and pretty much thinks 'something out there is going to eat me!!' so stay calm and when she rears dont pull back cause it will throw her off balance. stay calm. when she comes back down put her in a nice frame with her head tucked and trot her around then canter. maybe youre not working her enough. and it could possible be that she is being fed to much and getting hot (temperment wise). next time if you feel her getting ready to rear up turn her head and make her spin in tight circles. she wont be able to rear then. but dont back up cause she'll roll her wait to her hind end and be able to rear even quicker. i suggest just riding her once a week. dont practice barrels. do some nice hard ground work that will tire her out and dont feed her too much either. it might not be the food though. idk what you feed her.

hope i helped
Horses in heat are uncomfortable and not feeling to happy. They will get moody and annoyed a lot easier then usual! Try feeding her not to much high sugar foods and turn her out in the day so she can relax. Put her in a private field so others won't bother her.

Next you can give her some herbs and natural remedy's ( they are not drugs so you won't get in trouble at the show ring!) You can try chamomile and Rescue Remedy. Also you can try giving her a sponge bath when she is in heat in the summer. That might help her relax a little as well as taking her for a ride on the beach or a walk outside! Good Luck and hopefully she will settle down when her ';Special time'; comes!
