How do you deal with people who give you advice you don't agree with? Your career, hair/image, etc?

My parents HATE my hair. I have pretty long, past my shoulders hair that i get highlighted/dyed blonde, but it's professionally done. Some people really love it, I have a few friends that do. My parents HATE it, and that's that. Some people think I should be in THIS careerpath, others think THAT, it's just ultimately so confusing because I feel like I'm being pulled in 100000000000 different directions, and I'm not happy ultimately because it's not what I want personally.

So in the end what should I do, just go ahead with what I want regardless of what anyone else thinks or what?

My parents even made the comment to me ';You're not going to get hired anywhere with THAT hair, unless you work in the fashion industry.';

I'm just insulted and I really feel like conservative america wants you to look and act like an old fogey.

They don't welcome anything new or interesting.

How do we deal with all of this?How do you deal with people who give you advice you don't agree with? Your career, hair/image, etc?
Do what ever makes you happy, but a lot of times parents know what is right for their kids! To be honest I wouldn't want my son to have long highlighted hair. I really don't want to offend you, but that is girly. I don't know where you live, but I live in LA where everyone get the famous Hollywood Highlights. I also work at a hair salon. We only have guys with short blonde hair getting their hair highlighted to look more sun kissed and it looks natural. But if it makes you happy then do what you want with your self, because it makes YOU happy. Another thing I have to agree with your parents. If you want a professional job you have to look professional. Professional jobs will not hire you if you have long hair and you're a guy. Yeah I know its sad. But if you are working in a professional place then you are representing that certain someone or some company and you don't want people to laugh at you. Sorry for telling you all this, but its better to know the truth and do something about it.How do you deal with people who give you advice you don't agree with? Your career, hair/image, etc?
be yourself. if you follow what everybody else wants for you, instead of what you want, then youre going to be miserable like this forever. if you are a nice, respectful, and are willing to work, im am positive you will get a job. dont worry, just dont give up.

uniqueness = amazingness. XD
waaaaaaaaaah
I understand you 100%! I'm in the same situation, but since i'm in the MMA business i went a long with cutting my hair, even though my girlfriend is still quite angry about that! Hehe!

But it's all up to you in the end, people are different and they all have different opinions. Others will love your style while others will hate it!

Then there's always the ';in-between'; people, they'll probably agree with you and go with your style, since they aren't really on either side.

This is really all there is too it. About work, though... You might get judged, but probably only if it actually makes a difference.

It's all about your personality anyway, so if you're nice you'll get them to like you and the chances are they'll hire you whetever you're gay or from another country or religion.
if youre not pissin at least one person off, youre not doing something right.

youre complainin that not everyone loves you? well why should they, people have their own opinions and views through life. confidence and bravery is what stops you from cracking under the pressure and always believing in yourself, although of course we all have moments of weakness.

of course you can be an individual, but if you go around wearing clown shoes and constantly singing then of course thats the kind of behaviour people are gonna ***** about, since it likely annoys or aggrevates them (that said, if you did that i would definitely laugh at first) people arent scared of whats new in another person, they simply want someone that they feel happy and secure around. so stop whining, since thats how youre coming across, and try to figure out how you can sort out your problem.
